Artist Spotlight: Logan Hone

The first group to perform for the Jewel City Concert Series will be The Logan Hone Band on Saturday, September 28. Staff interviewed Logan Hone to learn more about him as a musician.

How did you begin your musical journey?

I grew up in a musical family.  I just took to it and have been pursuing music in every capacity I can ever since. It’s been a solid 20 years now. I’m just an absolute music lover. As soon as I started playing, I’ve been obsessed ever since. In the 6th grade when I started playing the drums is when I got really hooked. Then I got a saxophone in the 7th grade and that’s when I was just fully obsessed.

From where do you draw your creative inspiration?

I’ve drawn lots of inspiration from different types of music over the years. The main thing I’m excited about now is trying to feel really good while I play. That’s the biggest inspiration: using music as a tool for good health, good mental health, connecting with people, and having that kind of magical shared experience with other people through music.

Do you have any musicians you admire? If so, who and why?

Some huge inspirations are famous jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.  There are so many great musicians in LA. All the people I play with I love playing music with them. I direct a community band every Saturday at Hermon Park and it’s open to the public. It’s all ages and anyone can just show up and play. There are people who come regularly. I’ve been doing that for about six and a half years. I’m really inspired by everyone who comes. That kind of connection and community feeling is really valuable to me.

What is your favorite song to perform?

I have a song called Dance of Delight and that one usually goes really well. But I love playing songs that people recognize. I play a lot of weddings and when everyone recognizes a song, that can add to that magic feeling. Because everyone knows it, it creates a kind of shared experience where there are these expectations that can be met, but also surprises can happen because of that too.

What do you want your audience to know about your music?

The mission of my music right now is really clear. The mission of the music is to feel good, be really fun, upbeat, unapologetically enjoying music. The pursuit of feel-good music is what it’s all about. I’m going for heartfelt, sincere enjoyment of music.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

It’s got to feel good. Practice feeling good while you’re playing.

Logan Hone’s performances have been described as “crazy positive” and “effervescent”. He is best known for his magnetic joy, effortless musical flow, and fantastic dance moves while performing on saxophone and flute. He is a Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist musician, educator, and all-around music lover whose many creative, original projects include the 2020 instant-classic album: “Feel-Good Instrumental Music!” and directing an all-ages, all-skill-levels Community Band at Hermon Park since 2018. For this special performance, Logan will bring his all-star band for an unbelievably upbeat, joyful, and invigorating concert of feel-good music with flavors of jazz, cumbia, and pop.
